Honoring River City's Valor
Nine Medal of Honor Recipients called Richmond home. On November 20th, we'll gather to honor them and tell their stories.
Most Richmonders cannot name any of the Medal of Honor Recipients from our great city. Together, they embody the American experience; men of different colors, classes, and ages, they all came together in service to their country, with conduct "above and beyond the call of duty." From the 1860s to the 1960s, in Haiti, France, Vietnam, and right here in Virginia, they exhibited "conspicuous gallantry" and achieved the highest honor our nation can bestow.
Although we strive to honor these men every day, on November 20th we'll gather at the Valentine Museum with esteemed guests in order to celebrate their lives and actions and lay the groundwork for a permanent emblem of our city's respect for each and every one of them.
The evening funds the work that carries their example forward: Scholarships and grants in their names, youth education, and the effort toward a timeless and beautiful monument. Every seat and every sponsorship supports that mission.

Outside Ky Phu on December 18, 1965, First Lieutenant Barnum found the rifle company pinned down, its commander dying and its radio operator dead. He grabbed the radio, took command, and got them to the objective. He later served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He joins us as a visiting guest to honor Richmond's own heroes.

81st Mayor · City of Richmond
Dr. Danny Avula took office as the 81st Mayor of Richmond on January 1, 2025. Before public office he served the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts for 12 years, six of them as director. Born in Hyderabad, India, he immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1979. A father of five, Danny and his wife, Mary Kay, have lived in Richmond's East End for over 20 years.

Sponsorships are open to individuals and organizations who want to do more than take a seat. They carry tickets to the evening and they fund the scholarships and grants directly.

Monumental Honor is a 501(c)(3) run by volunteers. What this evening raises pays for named scholarships and grants for Richmond students, youth education about the nine Recipients, and the work toward a monument. The James Mifflin Allied Trades and Continuing Education Scholarship is presented on the night.
